    Frequently Asked Questions

    What are GLP-1's?

GLP-1 agonists are medications that mimic a hormone called glucagon-like peptide 1. When your blood sugar rises in response to eating, GLP-1’s prompt insulin production which suppresses your appetite. These medications also help you feel full faster and longer by slowing the movement of food out of the stomach, causing you to eat less.

What are the benefits of GLP-1's?

In addition to helping manage weight and blood sugar, there are some other benefits to GLP-1’s. Research has found that some drugs in these classes of medications may lower the risk of heart disease, heart failure, stroke, and kidney disease. People taking these medications have seen improvements in their cholesterol levels and blood pressure, though it’s not clear whether these benefits are directly from the medication or the resulting weight loss.

Are GLP-1 injections right for me?

Your first Weight Management appointment will consist of a thorough consultation with one of our licensed medical providers to determine if GLP-1’s are appropriate for you.

In general, this medication is intended to accelerate weight loss when used as part of a healthy lifestyle including diet and exercise. GLP-1’s aren’t recommended for those who have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasias as well as those who have an allergy to GLP-1 medications, a history of pancreatitis, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

How much weight will I lose?

While individual results can vary, people taking GLP-1’s average 3 to 5 pounds of weight loss per month with injections alone. However, those incorporating lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise may lose even more. Your licensed medical provider will recommend the appropriate dosage and goals based on your individual treatment plan.

    What are the side effects?

Like any medication, there is a risk of side effects from GLP-1’s. However, common side effects usually improve as your body acclimates to the medication and your licensed medical provider can recommend ways to help you manage the symptoms. The most common side effect associated with GLP-1’s is nausea, which is best controlled by making small changes in dosing as recommended by your licensed medical provider.

Less common side effects include belching, constipation, diarrhea, and fatigue. GLP- 1’s have also been associated with a slight increase in gallstones, and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) in Type 2 diabetics who also take insulin and medications known as sulfonylurea’s (Glyburide, Glimepiride, Glipizide).
